The Advisor Development Institute (ADI) offers faculty and staff the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to undergraduate advising at NC State University. This professional development program actively engages undergraduate advisors, advising administrators, and others committed to student success. Workshop facilitators come from across the university.

Advisor Development Institute Certificate
To declare your intention to earn the ADI Certificate, please complete this Google Form. Donna Burton, coordinator of the program, will then contact you.
The Advisor Development Institute Certificate recognizes participation in workshops focused on the three core competencies identified by the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA): Conceptual, Informational, and Relational and their applicability to undergraduate advising. The certificate can be earned within one year; however, if an individual needs longer to complete it, that option is available. Recipients receive their certificates at the time of the annual Undergraduate Academic Advising Awards ceremony each year. Candidates participate in the following workshops focused on advising undergraduate students:
Core Workshops (offered two times each in the Fall and Spring semesters)
- Introduction to Technology and Policy — Part One — MyPack tools and key undergraduate student success policies, including Satisfactory Academic Progress and readmission
- Introduction to Technology and Policy — Part Two — Structure of undergraduate degree audits, application of credits, exceptions and waivers, and Change of Degree Application (CODA) policies
- Communicating with Advisees and Holistic Advising — Communication as the key aspect of a holistic approach to guiding undergraduate students’ growth and development
- Career Resources** — Career Development Center programs and resources available to students
- Career Identity Program** — An introduction to the Career Identity Program open to all undergraduate students
- Inclusive Advising — A framework for advisors to understand the ideas, experiences, cultures, and perspectives of a diverse student population and serve all students equitably.
The other requirements are:
- Participating in three other sessions** of the individual’s choice. These electives can come from any offerings on campus, including (but not limited to) those from the Office for Faculty Excellence, Advising Technology, and the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity.
- The Virtual Resource Fair (you will be contacted with details once you have declared your intention to seek the certificate)
- A simulated advising appointment conducted with an experienced advisor completes the Certificate requirements.
**If you complete the Career Champions day-long training offered by the Career Development Center, you will meet all of these starred requirements.
